Protect Yourself from Scammers
Have you or someone close to you experienced a financial scam? Scams are not something to treat lightly as they are becoming increasingly sophisticated! The Merchantrade Money team prioritizes your card safety, as such we want to make sure you are well informed to protect yourself against scam calls.
Recently, a particularly cunning scam has been making the rounds, targeting users through calls, messages and malicious software. Here’s what you need to know to avoid scams, so you can continue enjoying your experience using Merchantrade Money.
How common scams work
- The first point of contact: It typically begins with a phone call. The caller will pretend to be calling from Merchantrade. They’ll inform you that your Merchantrade Money Card needs to be renewed.
Scammer calls from an unknown number
2. How they introduce the malicious link: They’ll further convince you by asking you to click on the link for an APK file (Android Package Compressor), which will require you to enter your card details.
3. They’ll prompt you for sensitive information: Once you’ve entered your card details, they will ask for your One-Time Password (OTP) and the 3-digit CVV from the back of your card. With this information, they will quickly steal money from your account!
How you can avoid this
- Do not answer calls from unknown numbers: Scammers often use spoofed numbers to appear as if they’re calling from a legitimate business. So if you get a call from an unfamiliar number, just ignore it!
- Never download APK files or share personal information: No legitimate company will ask you to download an APK file or request sensitive information from you.
- Keep your OTP and CVV private: Your OTP and CVV are important security information that should be kept private. For that reason, financial institutions will never ask for these details over the phone or through unsolicited messages.
Be sure to share these security tips with family and friends too.
